Although Gay contributes to some of these ongoing degrading of women, she also senses that there are different feminist flavours. She also insists that women's representations in music, movies, and literature is also an increasing issue. Gay's main issues in women's equal rights include reproductive rights, the persistence of rape culture, equal pay, access to health care, and physical security. In other words, Gay believes this makes herself and other women a bad feminist as they are contributing to the increase of vulnerability toward themselves. Gay complicates the issue further when she writes, "We have all manner of music glorifying the degradation of women, and damnit, that music is catchy, so I often find myself singing along as my very being I diminished" (89). In the words of Gay, her view of the leading proponent is that "Feminism is flawed because it is a movement powered by people and people are inherently flawed" (88). On the other hand, others argue that pedestal feminism does not allow for failure they have high expectations and a lack of inclusivity. Are feminists not allowed to enjoy the colour pink? Should they only like the stereotypical male colour of blue? To continue this point, would Gay also be considered a lousy feminist if she had long hair and wore a dress? I would argue that this is a personal preference, not a so-called gender position. The whole point of feminism and equal rights is to receive the same treatment as the other gender, meaning men and women should equally be allowed to like the same things.
From this perspective, I can't entirely agree with Gay because I do not believe that these aspects make anybody a bad feminist. She indulges in her love for the colour pink and floral fragrances but does not enjoy taking part in heavy lifting or hard work.
